Ecuador started with pumping its first crude oil from the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) block in Yasuní National Park. Yasuni National Park is arguably the most biologically diverse spot on Earth. It also is in the top for amphibian diversity compared to other sites sampled in the western Amazon as the total of its amphibian species are more than the United States and Canada combined.
“This is the worst imaginable place to be drilling for oil. The world can simply not afford to lose a place like Yasuni,” said Kevin Koenig, Ecuador program director at Amazon Watch, in a statement.
